library education online

The library provides all university departments education for their students. It can range from introductions for new students to the lectures on information retrieval and reference management in research methodology courses. We also provide education online for distance students by working with teachers in various distance learning courses.

Sara EriksénFor example, in the course "Research Methodologies with Focus on Informatics" is one element that the masters students in informatics are trained in information literacy by librarian Sofia Swartz. Sara Eriksen is responsible for the course and jumped at the offer of teaching after a meeting in the library: "The Library's offer to participate in research methodology course in informatics was just in time. The course is brand new and is given for the first time in autumn 2010. In a few short weeks, the course provide a comprehensive introduction to research, the most central techniques and practices. This of course include where to find information, and how to assess and use the information you find. It's very useful to be able to use specialist librarians in this context ", says Sara.

As students living in different parts of the world in different time zones, the lectures are recorded so they can take part of them when it suits them best.

They also go through different learning objects produced by the library, such as the Quick Search Guide and The Easy Guide to Referencing. In parallel, there are opportunities to connect with Sofia through discussion in It's learning or video calls. At the end of the course, students go through an exercise where they get to use the new skills to locate different types of materials, argument their source selection and state the sources by giving references to them.

Since many of the library's resources, such as literature databases, can be accessed outside of campus, the course content is quite similar to that we conduct for the campus students. It´s the presentation and communication that are slightly different.
