Theme of the week - Weeding project at BTH

Since this autumn a weeding project has been going on at Libraries Gräsvik and Infocenter. You, as a Library visitor, have probably noticed the librarians moving around the book shelves, pushing book carts and making notes on pieces of paper. Maybe you have also noticed that there is more space on some shelves? The weeding process also means that there are used books to browse among at the information desk at Library Infocenter.

Why are books weeded? There are many reasons, but one important reason for why we have launched a weeding project at BTH is that Library Infocenter moves to the renovated library on Campus Gräsvik in the summer of 2010.

When we decide if a book should be weeded, we look at several factors:

  • Has it been borrowed much?
  • Do we have many duplicates?
  • Is the book complete and clean?
  • Is there a newer version?
  • Is the book interesting for university employees and students?
  • Is the book a "classic"?

The aim of this work is to make the library holdings current, well-used and attractive to students and employees at the university. The weeding also gives us room on the shelves for new media, while old and unused books are removed.
