What is plagiarism and how can you avoid it?

During your time of study you will get to write many different types of texts where you should show your knowledge within the subject, and that you master the academic method of writing. Academic writing involves presenting your own research results, building up an argumentation and integrating previous research in your own discussion. If your references to previous research are not done correctly, you could risk plagiarism. To avoid being suspected of intentional plagiarism it is therefore important that you learn to distinguish between permitted and not permitted use other people´s work.

Tip

There is a useful checklist in Refero which can help you avoid plagiarism.

Refero - an Anti-plagiarism Tutorial is a web based tutorial which was developed to help students learn about plagiarism. You also get tips on how to quote and cite correctly to avoid plagiarism. The guide consists of 18 pages and takes about 30 minutes to go through. The guide was developed in collaboration between the libraries of Akademi Sydost and is available in Swedish and English.
