Sound as Communication - Sound Design
To be seen, you must be heard! The traditional images are increasingly using sound to reach out in the digital world. Working with sound design means, among other things, designing audio and computer systems in the cellphone, music, games and experience industry.
One of the students who often visits the library to be inspired by our books in subjects such as computer games, audio and technology and TV/video is Gustav Landbecker. He is studying Digital sound production at BTH in Karlshamn and is involved in an interesting project. Here he tells us a bit more about this and about himself.
Gustav Landbecker, sound designer
Name: Gustav Landbecker
Age: 28
Program: Digital sound production 3rd year, BTH, Karlshamn.
I have during the greater part of my life been interested in sound and music. It began with singing in a boy's choir when I was 10 years and continued with music and audio technology. After over four years as freelance sound engineer for the swedish television I decided to expand my knowledge and focus on sound design. Therefore I applied for the program "Digital sound production" at the Institute in Karlshamn.
Sound Design for Games Development
Over the past seven months, I have worked as sound designer and music coordinator of the game "Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic" for PlayStation® Network. My work with the production started in the spring term's production course and has proceeded until now, when I've produced the sound effects and coordinated the music that the game requires.
"Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic" is developed by Tarsier Studios, Karlshamn, for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe which has it's headquarters in London. This gave me the opportunity to go to London and meet with the sound designers that I worked with during the project. It was a successful and interesting visit where I had the chance to see how they work. I also got the opportunity to submit my CV and tell them a bit about myself.

Visions for the Future
My studies at the Institute have given me more confidence and better skills, both artistically and technically. To have the opportunity to work in Studio NetPort which has the latest technology is an important part of the education and a great advantage for the students who are studying Digital sound production.
My vision when I started studying was that in future I would work as a sound designer for movies. Working on a game project has opened new doors for me. Both games and movies requires specific knowledge about sound but I am not restricting myself to any particular direction. It is sound design I have a passion for.
This was in brief Gustavs story. All that remains is to wish him good luck in the future!
