I am a Full Professor in Computer Science at the Blekinge Institute of Technology, in the Faculty of Computing Sciences (Karlskrona: Sweden), and also a Finnish Distinguished Professor (FiDiPro) at the University of Oulu (Finland). I completed my PhD in March 1999 at the University of Southampton (UK), supervised by Dame Professor Wendy Hall, and co-supervise by Professor Rachel Harrison. My external examiner was Professor Barbara Kitchenham. Later on Barbara and I have collaborated on a number of research papers, and has been a very important mentor in my academic career.

Prior to leaving Brazil in August 1995 to carry out my PhD in the UK i used to work as a software practitioner (programmer -> business analyst -> project manager).

In May 1999 I moved to Auckland (New Zealand) to start my full-time academic career. This is when i started to carry out research in the areas of Web effort estimation, software effort estimation and Web metrics. These research areas led to several publications, one edited and two authored books, and have been the topic of several Masters and PhD theses I supervised and co-supervised.

The bulk of the research I am involved with is applied, and falls within computer science & empirical software engineering (e.g. machine learning applied to Web & software effort estimation and software maintainability prediction, value-based estimation using bayesian networks, cost estimation, use of an evidence-based paradigm, Web measurement and metrics).  However, recently i have also started to brach out a bit more into other fields to which Computer Science can also be applied to: healthcare and sustainability. Such work is being carried out via the supervision of PhD students at BTH.

In order to know the details on publications, please click on the side link 'Publications'.

With regard to citations, as per google scholar (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=Mz4IbXgAAAAJ&hl=en), my work has received over 3600 citations (including self citations), and has obtained awards for best papers at seven international conferences (twice at ESEM). My h-index on Google Scholar is 34.

I have given to date 10 keynotes (another another two still to happen) at international and local conferences and workshops, and invited talks at numerous events. In addition, I have been a member in the program committee of 150+ International & regional conferences, and 40+ international & regional workshops.

I love what I do, being it collaborating on research with other colleagues, supervising Masters and PhD students, lecturing, revieweing papers, organsing & chairing events... it's all great fun!

Note that EASE 2017 is coming to BTH (15th and 16th of June 2017)!!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss some possible collaboration, discuss some research, etc :). You can reach me using either emilia DOT mendes AT bth DOT se or emilia DOT mendes AT oulu DOT fi
