Part 1 of the next programme will take place in Sweden, May 11 - June 05, 2008. Part 2 takes place between January 29 - Fabruary 06, 2009. Official invitation letter has been sent out to invited countries, to be distributed by respective Swedish embassy/consulate.

General

The advanced international training programme is a mixture of lectures, seminars, case studies and study visits. The Management of Hydro Power Development and Use training programme gives participants insight into the latest trends and techniques in the field. It is designed to increase overall knowledge of hydrpower development, and covers the recommendations made in the World Commission of Dams report from 2000. The programme is run by Vattenfall Power Consultant (formerly known as SwedPower) in cooperation with Sweco. It is sponsored by Sida, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.

Participants

Participants should be experienced planners or decision-makers in ministries, local authorities, companies or NGOs involved in the devlopment of hydropower. Applications should be filed through the Swedish Embassy after official nomination by the appropriate national authority. Since its start in 1983, participants from more than 30 countries have followed the programme.

Contents

  • Introduction to energy planning, energy master plans and hydropower feasibility studies;
  • Technical aspects: electricity distribution, protection, O&M, rehabilitation, decommissioning;
  • Energy effiency, energy savings and unconventional energy-generation technologies;
  • WCD and related tools: Impact assessment - participatory processes, socio-environmental studies and programmes, other assessment methods - life-cycle assessment (LCA), multicriteria analysis (MCA) etc.;
  • Managing a hydropower business

Case studies

Several projects will be presented.

Programme content - part II

Part II is a one-week seminar that takes place somewhere in the world outside of Sweden. During the first part of the programme, participants produce a Plan of Action for his/her own Change Project, and the progress of this will be presented and discussed during the second part. Complementary lectures and local study visits are also part of the programme.
