The IUP programme in spring 2009 will take place in Karlskrona and Stockholm between March 10 - April 8, 2009 and a regional phase during fall 2009.

The overall objective of the International Training Programme on Integrated Urban Planning is to strengthen and develop the capability of high-level decision makers in the developing world to create capacity and knowledge within the field of Integrated Urban Planning.


The International Training Programme on "Integrated Urban Planning" is a two-phased program. Phase I (4.5 weeks) will take place in Stockholm and Karlskrona in Sweden while Phase II (10 days) will be held regionally. The programme is composed of 14 modules covering a variety of topics related to Integrated Urban Planning. Major topics to be treated include:

  • Discussion on the concept of Integrated Urban Planning
  • The planning process
  • Institutional models for planning organisations
  • Legislation, legislative tools and enforcement methods
  • Sustainable development
  • Environmental aspects including SIA and EIA
  • Public participation, gender mainstreaming
  • Financing and local economic development
  • Risk, security and robustness
  • Access to land, land management and land use
  • Implementation process, monitoring and maintenance
  • Traffic and transportation
  • Water supply and sanitation
  • Communication and information
  • Learning organisations and processes of change
  • GIS technology

Target Group

The training programme is designed for those holding professional positions with specific responsibility to develop capacity and knowledge within the field of urban planning in their home countries with at least 3 years of work experience. Applicants who have attended Sida courses in Sweden before will not be accepted. Excellent command in English language is necessary and certificate stating language level is necessary.
