A generic infrastructure for obstacle avoidance system development for helicopters is developed. The system uses active side-sticks to communicate between the pilot and helicopter, as aid in preventing the helicopter from crashes in an obstacle laden environment. This preventive aid was achieved by applying a virtual force field on the sticks which cause them to deflect with ultimate purpose of deviating the helicopter from a path with a likelihood of collision. In a hands free situation the sticks were equally designed to autonomously deflect to move the helicopter from harm’s way. Incorporated in the system is a collision detector, should the helicopter collide with an obstacle. The developed system displayed the generic characteristics of collision avoidance which include the detection of obstacles in its environment, the detection of collision and the prevention of collision through the application of repulsive forces on the side-sticks
