| Abstract: | Integrating factors are determined for ordinary differential equations of an arbitrary order. In the case of first-order equations the new definition coincides with the usual definition of integrating factor introduced by A. Clairaut in 1739. It is shown that higher-order equations, unlike the first-order equations, can have an integrating factor even when they do not admit Lie point symmetries. The method is illustrated by several examples. |
