GNU General Public License ver. 2 is today one of the most popular and accepted license. Many people think that GNU GPL is the best choice if you don´t have any commercial interests.
Sourceforge is a service where Open Source software can be made available.
There is a very good book from O'Reilley fully available on the net by Andrew M St. Laurent with the title "Open source and free software licensing".
