The main subject area Public Health Science
Public health "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private communities and individuals" is one of the main areas of study at the School of Health Science.
The subject is a multidisciplinary field of knowledge that describes and analyses the state of health and health behaviour in different populations from a societal perspective. The main content is based on a salutogenic approach and studies the changes in health and its determinants. It also proposes and evaluates measures that preserve and improve the health of the population. It deals with preventive rather than curative aspects of health. The focus is on the population level rather than the individual level. Public health research mainly deals with childhood conditions, working life, living habits, environment, social structure and health system influences on population health trends and the effects of different health policies.
