My research is largely focused on geriatric nutrition: energy and dietary intake in the elderly, physical activity in older people, malnutrition in the elderly and how to detect and prevent malnutrition in the elderly.

Title project/research area

The elderly and nutrition

In a number of different sub-projects the diet and nutrition, of both older people living at home but most of all elderly residents in various forms of senior housing, is being studied.
In most cases, data collection has been completed but data processing and publication is in progress. Dietary intake data have been collected for nearly 500 older people.
Subprojects:
- Diet and nutrition compared with estimated individual needs.
- Water- and fluid intake compared with estimated individual needs.
- Vitamin intake among older people, predominantly B-and D-vitamin.
- Diet and nutrition in relation to survival.
- Different methods for measuring dietary intake among the elderly.
- Different methods to measure and describe the nutritional status of the elderly.
- Medicinal intake linked to diet and nutrition among the elderly.

How do the elderly wish to eat?

The purpose of this study is partly to investigate what kind of food older people prefer to eat in order to obtain a summary that can support and help menu planning for the elderly, and partly to investigate the nutritional intake and nutritional status of a group of older people living at home with food distribution. Structured interviews have been conducted but not fully processed yet.

Parkinson and nutrition

In two longitudinal studies the relationship between nutritional status and the development of Parkinson's disease is being examined. In the older group, 54 older patients with Parkinson's are being followed for five years with respect to parkinsonian symptoms, ADL status and nutritional status. Finalisation of the project is in progress. In the younger group, some 20 young patients with Parkinson's are being followed for parkinsonian symptoms, ADL status, physical activity, diet and nutritional status and additional participants will be included.

Health professionals knowledge of and attitudes towards diet and nutrition

An instrument to test the knowledge of and attitudes towards diet and nutrition for older people in various parts of the health and elderly care is being developed. The questionnaire used is in the development stage and so far more than 2,000 questionnaires have been collected.

The meal environment at nursing homes

A structured observation schedule to investigate and describe the meal environment in nursing homes has been developed. The observation schedule is completed by students in the nursing and assistant nurse programs at the School of Health Science during the clinical education at nursing homes. The purpose of this study is partly to obtain a student participation in research and partly to describe the meal environment for nursing homes in Blekinge. Discussions are ongoing with the local dietitian in Karlskrona on the use and further development of this material.
