MSLS Class of 2008 Presents:

Steps toward Sustainability at Blekinge Institute of Technology: A Report to the BTH Board

This document is the result of an initiative of the master’s-level programme Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability, and provides a summary of recommended early actions for Blekinge Tekniska Högskola (BTH) in its journey towards sustainability. In total 63 early- to mid-career professionals with expertise in sustainable development worked for two months to study the applicability of technical and social innovations that could be applied at BTH in five main areas:

1. Sustainable Procurement

2. Sustainable Transportation

3. Energy and Water

4. Physical Learning Spaces

5. Research and Education Environment

They took on this initiative because of their passion for sustainability, and to support BTH in achieving its vision of being "Internationally competitive and nationally leading within the profile areas: Applied Information Technology and Sustainable Development of Industry and Society".

The central purpose of this report was to identify early initiatives where Blekinge Tekniska Högskola (BTH) has an opportunity to move towards becoming a sustainable campus.

The findings of the report were presented to the BTH Board of Governers on February 15th, 2008.

3 Energy and Water

3.1 Measure, Manage and Communicate Energy Use on Campus

3.1.1 Initiative: Implement an Energy Management System (EMS)

3.2 Energy Efficient Technology and Design

3.2.1 Initiative: Invest in Specific Technology and Design Features: Passive Design, Energy Efficient Envelope, Lighting

3.2.2 Initiative: Use energy efficient appliances and devices

3.2.3 Initiative: Onsite energy production

3.3 Water Efficient Technology and Design

3.3.1 Initiative: Water Awareness

3.3.2 Initiative: Invest in simple technologies to minimise water use

3.3.3 Initiative: Consider alternative technologies for water conservation (e.g. green roof on the new building, urine diversion toilets, rainwater capture...etc)


4 Physical Design of Learning Spaces

4.1.1 Initiative: Design circular classrooms with moveable furniture in the new building
