Research

I am a Ph.D. student and lecturer in Game AI. Games has always been an important part of my life since I got a Commodore 64 at the age of thirteen. My research interests are unconvential solutions to common problems, adaptivity and difficulty scaling, learning and player experience. I believe games are a very challenging test bed for many techniques.

Current Projects

Multi-Agent architecture for Starcraft bots

I am the designer and main programmer of BTHAI, a bot for playing StarCraft games. The bot uses BWAPI to connect to the StarCraft engine. BTHAI is based on a modulare multi-agent architecture and uses a combined pathfinding/Potential Fields solution for navigating the game world and attacking opponents in an efficient manner. The webpage can be found here:

Past Projects

A Potential Field based approach for RTS game AI

We have designed and developed a real-time strategy bot based on multi-agent potential fields for the RTS game engine ORTS. The bot is an example of how potential fields can be used to create complex tactical behaviors, and it easily won 3 of 4 categories in the annual ORTS tournament 2008.

Transmembrane domain prediction in protein sequences

This was a six month project based on the work I did in my master thesis. It involved investigating how different machine learning methods could handle the complex task of protein structure prediction. And most important; to see if there were methods able to reach the same level of accuracy as the most common used Hidden Markov Model.

Gaming Interests

My favourite game genres are RTS and roleplaying. I've been playing RTS games since I discovered Dune II around 1992. Recent favourites are Warcraft 3 and Dawn of War. And of course, Starcraft II now that is finally has been released!

I've been playing World of Warcraft frequently since about 2 years ago. I'm amazed about the social aspects, the cunning and interested community, and what attracts 9 million players worldwide.
