Curriculum Vitae

Resume

Professor Karl-Henrik Robèrt, M.D., Ph.D., is one of Sweden's foremost cancer scientists who, in 1989, initiated an environmental movement called "The Natural Step". Dr. Robèrt received his M.D. in 1975, his Ph.D. in 1979 and in 1981 he became an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine. In 1984, he won the Swedish Hematological Association Research Award. From 1985-1993 he headed the Division of Clinical Hematology and Oncology at the Department of Medicine at the Huddinge Hospital. He was the Editor of Reviews in Oncology from 1987 to 1993.

While heading a research laboratory at the Karolinska Institute Dr. Robèrt authored more than ninety scientific publications concerning leukemia, lymphoma, lung cancer and their clinical implications, and was a frequent and well known keynote speaker of international conferences on these issues. He educated 4 young scientists who published their doctoral dissertations at his research laboratory.

His research on damaged human cells provided a platform for his interest in environmental questions. Later, he was leading a scientific consensus process that arrived at the development of a unique way of systematic planning towards sustainability – ‘backcasting from first order principles, the "system conditions"’. Together with a growing network of scientists and decision makers in business and politics, this new approach has been developed into a concrete framework for planning. The framework and its application for concrete planning as well as for the selection and design of cohesive tools for sustainable development, are described in a number of scientific publications and doctoral dissertations around the world.

At the launch of The Natural Step, Dr. Robèrt edited an educational material and distributed it to every household and school in Sweden. Thereafter he initiated a number of independent professional networks to test the relevance of the framework for their respective fields, for example groups of business executives from major Swedish companies. Many of those, such as IKEA, Electrolux, Scandic Hotels, Swedish McDonalds, construction companies, the leading supermarket chains of Sweden, insurance companies, banks and a large number of other business corporations, as well as 60 Swedish municipalities creating an association of ‘eco-municipalities’, have been helpful in promoting the build-up of an international network of executives to apply the TNS framework in their organizations, mainly businesses, universities and municipalities. Ten TNS offices around the world are now working in the same way as the original Swedish organization “Det Naturliga Steget”, i.e. serving as a dialogue-bridge between scientists on the one hand, and decision makers in politics and business on the other.

Dr Robèrt has been Adjunct Professor in Physical Resource theory at the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg for seven years, and since September 2002, Dr. Robèrt is Adjunct Professor of Sustainable Product Development at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Karlskrona, Sweden. He has written many books and articles and scientific publications on the environment and sustainability, which encourage an understanding of the linkage between ecology, economy and technology. In 1999 he was awarded the Green Cross Award for International Leadership and in 2000 he won the Blue Planet Prize. Dr Robèrt is a member of Round Table for Romano Prodi. The Round Table will look at the social and economic project for Europe.
