The education fulfils the goals set by the Swedish Higher Education Act.

Introduction

Software has become an increasingly important element of many products that are developed today. There has been a shift in development costs from hardware development to software solutions. This increases the need to be able to develop software products with the right functionality, quality, on time and on budget.

Goal

The master programme in Software Engineering is constructed to meet these challenges by educating software developers in advanced software engineering concepts that covers the entire development chain.

Contents

The study programme is one year, and contains only mandatory courses. The mandatory courses provide a basis and cover the topics that the software engineering industry currently requires. All courses are designed to present a blend of state-of-practice and state-of-the-art. This is further strengthened by the fact that the university hosts active research within the areas of all the mandatory courses.

The teaching is done by professionals who have considerable industry contacts and many of them are also active researchers in the Software Engineering community. The research group in Software Engineering is internationally recognised within the area, and members of the research group have won several prestigious awards throughout the years.

All courses are taught from a process, product and service perspective. A mandatory Master’s dissertation project comprising ten weeks is also included in the programme. The education comprises seminars, individual and team assignments, written reports, small research assignments, and oral presentation of results.

Requirements

The entrance requirement for the study programme are a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems or Computer Engineering. English language requirements are "Engelska B" or equivalent.

Specific eligibility in the English language from upper secondary school for non-Swedish students:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test with a minimum score of 575/90 or IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) test with a minimum score of 6.5 no section below 5.5, or University of Cambrige and Oxford tests. Detailed information is available on www.studera.nu.

Special selection
The base for ranking of applicants is previous university studies, GPA (grades from previous university studies) and English.

The first step of the ranking process is an assessment of the relevance of the area and specialisation of the applicants' previous university studies to the applied programme. This assessment is made in three categories: minimal relevance = merit points 0, average relevance = merit points 0,5, high relevance = merit points 1. Finally, the applicants' TOEFL or IELTS level in English is normalised to a value between 0 and 1, where 0 is the minimum level to pass the prerequisites of the applied programme and 1 is the maximum level of the test. Applicants' who are not required to prove their English skills with TOEFL or IELTS tests will get the merit point 1. These two merit point values are added to a total merit value between 0 and 2. A maximum of 2 merit points will be given, according to the above given details.
