Strategic Management for Sustainability

The purpose of the Strategic Management for Sustainability (STM) course is to provide the student with an overview of strategic management concepts and to allow students to practice and gain experience using Strategic Management techniques by applying the concepts to a real organisation. It is a response to the need to develop practical management tools and methodologies that enable the realisation of a strategic organizational vision - an understanding of "doing things right for sustainability".

Course content includes organisational learning and change, strategic planning, backcasting from principles, building an organisational vision, systems dynamics and strategic planning, prioritization support for decision makers, and management systems - all as they relate to the core concepts of SSD (7,5 ECTS credits).

Scheduled lecture/seminar hours: 5 - 7 hours/week.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Assess and explain an organisation's core ideology.
  • Create a vivid description and Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) for a chosen organisation that could serve to motivate its transition towards its vision within sustainability constraints
  • Describe the business case for sustainability in general terms and also as it relates to a specific organisation.
  • Assess an organisations current reality from the perspective of its vision.
  • Describe the concept of creative tension and apply it to strategic planning.
  • Develop a strategic Action Plan based on Backcasting from Sustainability Principles.
  • Consider how possible actions can be prioritised to move the organization to-wards its vision by applying multi-criteria decision-making concepts.
