FIVE parallell workshops to choose from!

On Thursday afternoon March 8th 15:30 - 18:30 there will be five different workshops, running in parallell, to choose from. You can sign up for a specific workshop by sending an e-mail to sider07.konferens@bth.se before the conference starts, or by adding your name to the workshop participant list when you sign-in at the conference site.

workshop 1: Capturing the user's opinion

Workshop organizers: Mårten Ahlberg, Usability Engineer and Mark Hinely, Technical Writer, UIQ Technology, together with Jeff Winter, Doctoral Candidate from Blekinge Institute of Technology

This is one occasion where you don’t have to worry about turning off your mobile phone when you enter the room! We would like you to help us in our research of the user experience.

The workshop will be consist of a short hands-on test of mobile phones (remember to bring your phone with you!) followed by discussion in small groups and with the group as a whole. The purpose of the workshop is for us together to arrive at a number of attitude assessments for capturing the user’s opinion – the things that you love about using your phone, and the things that you hate!

If the participants give their consent, we would like to film the workshop, in order to use it as a source of research material.

Maximum number of participants: 18

workshop 2: Using the identity toolkit (ITK)

Workshop organizers: Henriette Koblanck, professor and head of the Master program of Design, together with students from the Design program at the University of Kalmar

This design workshop focuses on a method for the construction of visual identity, ITK. Participants in the workshop will learn and experience the method ITK, which is very useful when an identity has to be created for something. The resulta are a few lead words and, most importantly, a visual account and description of the proposed identity. The method works well both in collaborative and in-house development processes.

workshop 3: challenges for ubiquitous design methods

Workshop organizers: Daniel Spikol and Arianit Kurti, Doctoral Candidates from the research group CeLeKT, Växjö University

The goal of the workshop is to explore and discuss how Activity Theory can be used in the design of ubiquitous environments. We are open to expanding and from the ideas of this theories and the inclusion of others.

Organisation of the workshop:

Part 1:

  • Call for 1 page case descriptions, proposals or presentations
  • 15 minutes - Quick introduction to the workshop and ourselves
  • 30 minutes - Presentation of CeLeKT, some of our cased and Activity Theory as a design model
  • Discussion

Part 2:

  • 45 minutes - Hands on brainstorm to investigate models for design situated learning environments that explore collaboration across groups
  • 15 minute- sum up

workshop 4: designing in groups - tips and tricks?!

Workshop organizer: Sus Lundgren, IT University, Gothenburg

Letting design students work in groups has many advantages; they learn from and with each other, they can take on bigger projects, they take less time to supervise etc. But there are also many issues related to this; how to create groups, how to supervise them, how to grade them, how to make sure that everyone learns, works and understands.

At this workshop, aimed above all at teachers and supervisors, we share our best tricks to deal with the intricacies of groups.

workshop 5: Guided tour of ronneby's culture centre

Workshop organizer/tour guide: Rosalind Mudge, Cultural Department, Ronneby Municipality

Welcome to Ronneby’s Culture Centre – Kulturcentrum

This "workshop" is actually a guided tour of three major watercolour exhibitions featuring established artists within Europe and a judged exhibition of Scandinavian artists. The exhibitions are located in Ronneby's Culture Centre, an interesting and nicely restored building from 1907 which was originally built as a storage warehouse for the famous Kockums enamel factory, and which is now one of southern Sweden's largest art halls. Besides art exhibits, Ronneby Municipality also uses the Culture Centre for arranging concerts, open lectures and design workshops for pre-school children and school classes as well as municipal citizens and visitors in general.

There may also be time to view other historic buildings and graffiti paintings nearby.

The guided tour will end at 17:30, offering participants an opportunity to do some sightseeing on your own in central Ronneby before heading back for the conference dinner at Ekmans.
