Planning for Sustainable Tourism

A toolbox for integrating sustainable tourism into spatial planning at local and regional level

The Agora Network Sustainable Tourism Development in the Baltic Sea Region has produced guidance and tools for developing sustainable tourism. The Swedish project Integrating sustainable tourism in planning at local and regional level run jointly by the European Tourism Research Institute, Östersund and the School of Planning at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona have produced this toolbox for the planner to assist in integrating sustainable tourism development into spatial planning at local and regional level.

The contribution also derives from research and development in the national research programme "Tools for environmental assessment in strategic decision-making" initiated and co-ordinated from BTH.

A toolbox of four compartments

This toolbox for spatial planning for sustainable tourism and is structured into three levels:

1. A basic set on this home page presents concepts, issues and crucial questions to address for the spatial planner working to integrate sustainable tourism.

2. Links to useful tools and texts directly related to the practical work of the planner.

3. Further reading, in depth material, textbooks and scientific articles.

 4. Material from Agora training seminars and conferences organised by BTH/ETOUR (the link leads to another site)

An evolving toolbox

The agora programme has produced this toolbox. The School of Planning at Blekinge Institute of Technology teaching and researching spatial planning, environmental assessment and outdoor recreation and nature tourism in several projects and programmes and partnerships will continue to update and evolve this site.

This home page for the Agora/BTH toolbox for spatial planning for sustainable tourism is temporary. The BTH system is at present undergoing revision. The toolbox will have its own home page which means that the lay out and the BTH information in the left column will be replaced with links in the toolbox.
