MiSt - TOOLS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT IN STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING
MiSt is an interdisciplinary research programme on tools for environmental assessment in strategic decision making funded by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency . The programme is co-ordinated from the Spatial Planning Programme of Blekinge Institute of Technology.
The focus of the MiSt-programme is the empirical study of effectiveness of tools of environmental assessment as aid to strategic decision making. The object of the research is to study the function of tools that aid in environmental assessment as a key component in strategic decision making.
The aim is:
a critical examination of the function of tools
a theory based understanding of their effectiveness
and ultimately a development of prescriptions for effective tool use including effective combinations of tools.
Two perspectives running through the programme are public participation and legal regulation of tools.
There are four components to the program:
Empirical research projects;
Concurrent programme activities aiming at integrating projects, including a "research school" for doctoral students from the programme institutions but also from other institutions;
Exploratory projects which will lead to further empirical projects;
Synthesis and summary including communication with users.
