Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Background
Thermal efficiency is a newly created area within Volvo cars, working to create Volvo´s most energy efficienct cars through optimization of the thermal systems. We are a part of the department Sustainability Centre, and our goal is to reduce the environmental aspects caused by inefficiency of the thermal systems and at the same time maximize the range for all of Volvo´s electric cars.

This thesis work is a collaboration with the climate department, meaning you will have two supervisors. Your main team will however be at Thermal Efficiency.

Scope
There are a number of different heat sources in an electric vehicle, electric motors, inverters, high voltage battery and various control and computing units.

The aim of this thesis work is to build knowledge about how these heat sources are best used and combined to be harvested as heat sources by the heat pump for cabin heating.

The investigation will be conducted by performing combined 1D thermal and fluid dynamic simulations.

Your contribution is our future
We see that you have a background in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or other relevant area, and are at the end of finalizing your master´s degree. You have a structured approach and an interest in virtual development. Knowledge in Computational Fluid Dynamics and mathematical modeling is meritorious, and your English is fluent.

Duration
The work will start in Spring 2023, but the start date could be discussed. The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks, giving 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at the University. This thesis is suitable for 1-2 people.
