Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

The Electric Drive department at Volvo Cars is proud of being one of the most successful players in SW development for Electric Vehicles. We are responsible for delivering system solutions and SW functionality for the Inverters, Electric machines, and transmission in our electrified vehicles. Our vision is to become “Leading in electrification” and aiming to contribute to world class sustainability, energy efficiency, E-machine functionality, customer satisfaction, to all our future products.

Develop a Volvo standard for copper laser welding:
Increasing demand for electric vehicles has put a significant stress on designing highly efficient E-machines. One of our focus areas is the bonding between the copper busbars that connects the electric motor and the inverter and the copper winding to the AC Choke

The main objective with this thesis work is to develop and create a new Volvo standard for laser welding of copper wire.

Activities we foresee that should be done during this thesis work are:
• Benchmarking of international standards for laser welding of copper.
• Support in describing quality requirements for welding operation
• Support in creating technical regulation.
• Describe verification methods
• Technical discussions with suppliers of welding equipment
• Cooperate with Volvo Standard Department to implement a new laser welding of copper standard for Volvo Cars.

We believe that the suitable students study Electric power engineering or Mechanical Engineer.

• The duration of the Thesis is approx. 4-5 months
• The Thesis starts in spring 2023, exact date to be discussed
• 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
• This thesis is to be conducted by 2 students working in a pair
• Office, computer, and software will be arranged by University and Volvo Cars.
