The aim of the course is to provide knowledge and understanding of the specificity of the global software projects in general and outsourcing in particular, with respect to communication, collaboration and coordination of activities within software development, and the importance of interpreting and sensitively exploit diversity (incl. cultural, and organizational) in a professional career. The course will illustrate the state-of-the-art knowledge in the field and focus on industrial case studies as a source of reflection and learning.

  • Entry requirements: At least 120 credits in a technical subject and a minimum of 2 years professional experience in software development (shown by, for example, a work certificate from an employer).


The course consists of five modules containing different topics for software developers and project managers: 1) basic concepts, 2) key challenges, 3) the feasibility of offshoring and outsourcing, 4) distributed teamwork, and 5) distributed project management.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, the students shall be able to:
• Understand the risks associated with global projects, demonstrate knowledge of methods to reduce these risks, the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding of the assessment of the feasibility of offshoring.

• Demonstrate the knowledge of techniques that will reduce the risks of global projects.

The course is organized around a number of video lessons and course materials that describe case studies and their practical consequences.

Work placement

No work placement is included in the planned learning activities. BTH is aiming for a close contact with the surrounding community when developing courses and programmes.

Time allocation

On average, a student should study 67 hours to reach the learning outcomes.
This time includes all the various available learning activities (lectures, self studies, examinations, etc.).
