About the programme

Gain leadership and managerial skills as an engineer

Our MBA programme targets candidates with at least a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and two years of relevant professional experience following that degree. If you fulfil these criteria and want to take the next step in your career in a leadership and managerial role, this programme is for you. The curriculum is carefully designed to help you achieve your future goals.

By joining this programme you will build necessary skills on:

  • motivating co-workers to reach common goals, e.g. leadership in business units or projects.
  • designing human resource incentives to match business interests.
  • evaluating investment alternatives under constraints.
  • analysing markets for business operations.
  • using scientific methods to make informed managerial decisions.

Upon graduation, you will be awarded Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Industrial Economics and Management.

Technology, industry dynamics, and innovation in focus

Courses are designed with a focus on the interplay between technology, industry dynamics, and innovation. The curriculum is consistent with the technical environment in which you operate. This programme also corresponds to the faculty research interests, specifically, (1) how to manage innovations and technology, and (2) how industry dynamics affects technological change and economic policy.

Courses

The curriculum of the MBA programme is designed to develop your managerial and analytical skills related to company and industry challenges. Note that 1.5 credits are equivalent to two weeks of study. The course overview is as follows:

Principles of Leadership and Management (7.5 credits, Semester 1)

This course deals with how different types of leadership, managerial functions, and styles impact organisational performance. You develop skills in applying chosen leadership and managerial styles to enhance the motivation of knowledge workers.

Corporate Finance (7.5 credits, Semester 1)

This course covers models for assessing financial investments in various contexts. You develop skills in making optimal investment decisions to maximise financial returns.

Managerial Economics (7.5 credits, Semester 2)

Managerial Economics deals with the effect of demand and supply on operation decisions of the company. At the end of this course, you will acquire a better understanding of demand estimation and production forecasts to reach the company’s objective.

Strategy and Control (7.5 credits, Semester 2)

With this course, you will be acquainted with fundamental models about how companies can sustain their competitive advantages. You will also learn to conduct the industry analysis and design incentive structures for employees to implement the corporate strategy.

Economic Analysis of technology and innovation (7.5 credits, Semester 3)

In this course you learn how to analyse of technological change and innovation and how it impacts competition and business strategy. The role of intellectual property, network effects, and technology standards are inherent parts related to technological change. Other aspects of the course are markets for technology, and diffusion of new technology. The course utilizes your skills from previous courses and is the programme’s profile course. Upon completion of the course, you will have acquired skills to predict consequences of technological change and innovation as a manager.

Research Methods in Industrial Economics (7.5 credits, Semester 3)

You learn about conducting scientific investigations of topics within industrial economics. This includes formulating research problems, choosing research design, and critically evaluating the conduct of the investigation. Upon completion of this course,  you will be able to produce and validate the results of your scientific study.

Master Thesis (15 credits, Semester 4)

You conduct an independent investigation in connection to one or more of the MBA programme’s focus areas. You learn to identify your research topic within an existing relevant research discipline and demonstrate your ability to deliver empirical evidences.

Rate of study

To enable you to work during your studies, our programme runs at 50% pace. This means that one year of study is conducted over two years. You are expected to study on average 20 hours per week. All teaching materials (lectures, assignments, discussions) and examinations are delivered online via our learning management system. There are currently no mandatory physical gatherings. To maximize the flexibility of your studies, scheduled activities are kept to a minimum. Course assessments can include individual or group assignments, and individual examinations.

You will join our MBA classes of diverse nationalities, various demographic profiles and industry expertises. You will be in contact with the faculty members who are senior experts in teaching and research. This vibrant learning environment helps you extend and leverage your professional network.

Quality assurance

We are continuously striving to deliver high-quality experiences throughout our MBA programme. For each course, we receive your valuable feedbacks via course evaluations. Furthermore, we also collect your evaluations of the overall MBA programme twice a year.

At the university level, an independent academic committee reviews our programme contents, study conduct, and students’ performance twice a year. The Higher Education Council of Sweden evaluates our programme every five years concerning the quality of teaching staffs, pedagogical methods, and learning outcomes.

The MBA programme manager ensures the quality delivery of education, including programme development and planning, and student relationship management.

FAQs

What is the first-year class size?

Currently, we admit 80 students per academic year. The acceptance rate is roughly ten percent.

Can I send in my application after the deadline has passed?

We only have one application round per year and we do not process late applications for this programme. See important dates on our Apply page.

What is the study pace?

The study pace is half-time, which means that two weeks correspond to one week of full-time study or 1.5 ECTS credits. You are not allowed to study at a faster pace. The programme comprises seven courses: six award 7.5 ECTS credits each and the MBA thesis awards 15 ECTS credits to complete 60 ECTS credits in total.

What does a typical MBA class look like?

The typical class is a blend of nationalities across geography and industry sectors. Our Swedish study environment is dynamic and encourages group work conducive for improving on each other’s ability. It builds on the commonality of all our students, which is their professional background as experienced engineers.

Does the programme require physical meetings?

No, there are currently no physical meetings. All activities, including course participation and examinations, are carried out online through our learning management system. However, there are several group assignments throughout the programme, in which you will be remotely working in teams.

How important is it for me to visit the campus?

You are not required to visit the campus in Karlskrona, Sweden. You are more than welcome to pay us a visit, if you wish. Please schedule the meeting with us.

When does the semester start and end?

The academic year starts in the Autumn, i.e. early September. The Spring semester ends mid-June.

Do courses run in parallel?

Courses are run serially, one at a time.

What specialisations do you offer?

We offer general MBA programme with no specialized track. Nevertheless, the programme focus is on the interplay between technology, industry dynamics, and innovation.

What degree is awarded upon my graduation?

You will be awarded Master of Science (MSc) Degree in Industrial Economics and Management. Note that the Master Degree in Business Administration (MBA) is not granted under the Swedish Higher Education system.
