Bibliometrics

Bibliometrics means research on scientific communication and is a type of publication measurement (biblos: book and metron: measure). The basis of nearly all bibliometric research are publications, authors or sources and references – separately or combined. Bibliometrics can for example be used to analyse research.

Fields of Application

  • Basis for evaluation of research, with the help of citation and article counting.
  • Describing the social structure of research and contents specialization.
  • Analysing information use and demand.
  • Visualization of information quantities.

Google Scholar is a freely available search engine where you can see how many and who have cited a certain article.

Web of Science is a citation database that covers most subject fields. It forms the basis for the majority of today’s bibliometric analyses.
