The day before, on May 13 open lectures will be held.

Academic celebrations and traditions
Every university and college has its own special celebrations and traditions. Jubilees and anniversaries of various kinds are celebrated. Among these traditions is the common academic ceremonial tradition of celebrating the conferral of doctorates and the installation of professors.
Promotion refers to the ceremony by which a university or college, which has permanent research resources, gives the appropriate outward signs of doctoral dignity. The word promovera comes from the Latin verb promovere, which means to bring forward, to push forward, but here in a figurative sense it means to promote.
In addition to doctoral conferrals, professorial inaugurations are a tradition at all Swedish universities and research universities.
The inauguration is the occasion when a professor, as the foremost representative of a research discipline, takes up his or her chair.

Promotion and installation

Doctorate
Those who have defended their doctoral thesis at BTH during the past year are invited to be formally conferred with a doctorate at the academic ceremony.
At the graduation ceremony, the doctoral candidates are awarded their dignities through the insignia, i.e. hat and ring, by the promoters, who at BTH are the deans of the faculties. The ring is in gold and can be ordered in red or white gold. The hat badge is gold-plated in red gold.

Installation
Those who are appointed or have been appointed as a professor at BTH during the past year are invited to be formally installed at the academic ceremony.
The installation at the academic ceremony has been preceded by those to be installed (installandi) being given the opportunity to give a lecture (installation lecture).
Honorary doctor
According to tradition, an honorary doctorate can be awarded at BTH's academic ceremony.
An honorary doctorate is an expression of the university's appreciation of outstanding achievements in one of the university's areas of activity.
The person appointed to an honorary doctorate must have some connection to the university and have contributed in some way to the university's activities. However, honorary doctorates may not be awarded in return for financial grants or similar.
