Blekinge Institute of Technology and the defense and security company Saab have a cooperation agreement on research, education and innovation. The purpose of the agreement is to develop activities that benefit both parties in strategically important areas of cooperation.
Together, BTH and Saab will develop activities in education and research that benefit both parties and make skills and resources available to each other. The focus areas include systems engineering, computer science and software engineering. Read more about the strategic areas of collaboration below.
BTH's focus on applied research and long tradition of collaboration with industry and society is very much in line with Saab's needs in areas such as machine learning and marine technology.

Strategic areas for collaboration
- Research activities
BTH conducts research in technology and applied IT. The focus is on applied research in close collaboration with companies, research institutes and authorities. Relevant focus areas for applied research include systems engineering and signal processing, mechanical engineering and product development, computer science and computer security, and software engineering and software-intensive systems.
Saab works extensively with various research projects and close collaboration with academic institutions is an integral part of these activities. As Saab is a multi-technology company, the research topics vary, but in general they are in engineering. The forms and level of commitments may vary depending on topics, funding, resources, etc. - Education and training
Relevant engineering specialisations at BTH include AI and machine learning, computer security, industrial engineering, marine engineering, mechanical engineering and software engineering. BTH also offers highly relevant skills development courses for professionals as well as contract training based on the needs of industry or society.
Saab needs to continuously train its personnel through various activities. In the fast-changing world of technology, it is important to conduct skills development and retraining, especially in areas such as data science, including AI and machine learning. - Skills supply
BTH collaborates with industry and public organisations in several ways. It also aims to increase staff mobility and collaboration between academia and industry on skills.
Saab aims to increase staff mobility between industry and academic institutions. The form may vary, but Saab is very much in favor of using industrial PhD students and affiliated staff as instruments for collaboration with academia. - Innovation for civil-military synergies
Sweden has a long tradition of close cooperation between government, academia and industry, so-called triple helix cooperation, to achieve civil-military synergies and solve military, industrial and other related problems in a faster, more efficient and more innovative way. Many technology areas have both civilian and military applications, and both BTH and Saab see a potential to jointly contribute to a strengthened and more developed defense innovation system.
Specific joint projects in these strategic areas will be regulated through separate agreements and action plans.
