Department of Industrial Economics

The Department of Industrial Economics is one of six departments at the Faculty of Engineering at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH).

We offer programs in the main field of industrial economics, both on campus and distance learning. Our programmes give you a broad economic competence or the opportunity to specialise in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Research at BTH

Research in industrial economics at BTH focuses on the interaction between technology, innovation and business development. We investigate how technology-based business ideas and innovations create value in both new and established industries.

Our research areas:

  • Innovation, technology and management
Here we study companies, projects and organisations with a focus on resources, strategies and competence development in relation to technological development and innovation. We conduct research on business models, strategies and investment risks.
  • Industrial Dynamics and Technological Change
In this area, we analyse how markets, firms and industries develop and change over time. We study entrepreneurship, the emergence of new industries, and how technology and digitalisation affect society.

Examples of research projects

Local entrepreneurship and crime

Participants: Pontus Braunerhjelm, Martin Svensson and Viroj Jienwatcharamongkhol

The project investigates how crime and insecurity affect entrepreneurship in Swedish municipalities. By combining data from the police crime register and Statistics Sweden, we study how crime and perceived insecurity affect business establishment, growth and relocation.

A particular focus is on identifying when local disturbances reach a level that causes businesses to leave the area - so-called tipping points. The project contributes to understanding how early interventions can counteract negative developments and strengthen the local business community.

Education

Programme

MBA programme, 60 credits

Our MBA programme gives you more choices and opportunities as an engineer. You develop your ability to integrate technology with economics in context and build on previous experiences with fresh knowledge of strategy, financing, organisation and leadership. Read more about the content on the programme's website.

Course package

Specialised courses in industrial economics and management, 30 credits

The course package offers specialised courses in industrial economics and management for those who want to deepen and broaden their knowledge in the field. All courses are half-time, which means that two courses are studied in parallel. The course package begins with the courses Product Management and Process and Project Management. These courses develop your knowledge of management and planning to achieve long-term sustainable and profitable products and product portfolios as well as effective business processes and projects. The third and fourth courses are both a deepening and broadening of the introductory courses. In courses three and four, you develop knowledge of strategy and leadership in primarily technology- and knowledge-intensive companies and organisations. The courses are distance learning and given in English.

  • BTH strengthens collaboration with top Japanese universities

Wen Pan Fagerlin participated in Kanagawa University's international staff exchange week in Japan to explore new opportunities for joint teaching and research.
  • TIEK Professors meet Nobel Prize Laureate

TIEK professors Pontus Braunerhjelm and Martin Andersson were invited by the Embassy of Canada in Stockholm to meet Nobel Prize laureate Peter Howitt at a special academic gathering.
  • Mixed Housing Alone Will Not Reduce Segregation in Sweden

Efforts to create “mixed neighbourhoods” by combining rental and owner-occupied housing will not be enough to address Sweden’s growing segregation, argues Professor Charlie Karlsson in a recent Göteborgs-Posten article. Real change, he says, requires tackling deeper social and economic inequalities that shape where people live.
