Department of Technology and Aesthetics

The Department of Technology and Aesthetics is one of three departments in the Faculty of Computing. We work to develop education, research and innovation in our core areas: media technology, technoscientific studies, culture and communication.

We are an active interlocutor and driving force - locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Our vision is to understand the present and shape the future. Through our education and research, we give our partners and students the tools to create meaningful solutions for real needs.

Research activities

Research at DITE is based on an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective with roots in computer science and technoscience. We explore digital technologies, visual and auditory expressions with a focus on:

  • Design of experiences and processes
  • Analysis and quality assessment of experiences
  • Methods for participation and collaboration
  • Application of new digital technologies

From concept development to prototyping and evaluation, we work closely with our partners to create digital experiences that make a difference, especially in physical environments.

Our vision is to be participatory pioneers exploring future possibilities and developing solutions for societal challenges where media technologies play a crucial role.

Our research profiles

The research activities at DITE are organised in four main areas:

  1. Design for Digital Media - Creative development of visual and auditory digital solutions.
  2. Feminist Technoscience - Innovative perspectives that challenge norms and shape equitable technologies.
  3. ICT4D (Information and Communication Technology for Development) - Technologies that drive global development.
  4. Innovation systems and development - Systems and processes that enable innovation and societal improvement.

Research in close collaboration

Research and undergraduate education are closely linked, providing unique opportunities for our students. Media Technology students are well prepared to start their own businesses or work in areas such as game development and audio production.

Research is both regionally and internationally rooted:

  • Regionally: Collaboration with NetPort Science Park in Karlshamn, where digital media is one of the focus areas.
  • International: Active participation in networks both in and outside Europe, which creates new opportunities for collaboration in academia and industry.
