Deans

At BTH, there are two deans and two pro-deans who are appointed through elections at the university.

The dean's assignment and responsibilities and the overall forms for appointing the assignment are regulated in BTH's rules of procedure and the vice-chancellor's delegation of authority.

The university's rules of procedure describe the roles, responsibilities and tasks of the university's organizational levels and its decision-makers.

The rules of delegation list the cases where the vice-chancellor originally has the right of decision but has chosen to delegate this to other decision-makers.

Mission

Each faculty is led by a dean.

The deans are responsible for the development, follow-up and quality assurance of the faculty's academic activities in accordance with the decision-making mandates set out in the Vice-Chancellor's Scheme of Delegation. The deans shall also be responsible for the quality and planning of third-cycle education.

The dean shall have a deputy who is called the vice-dean. The associate dean serves in the dean's place and otherwise replaces the dean to the extent the dean decides.

Election and appointment

Eligible for election as dean is a scientifically competent teacher with a teaching position according to BTH's employment regulations. In addition, the teacher must have a permanent position covering at least 80% of the entire term of office and have sufficient knowledge of the Swedish language for the authority's activities.

The process

  • All teachers at the faculty are invited to submit proposals to the dean. Nomination proposals for dean should be sent to registrator@bth.se.
  • The nominee must be asked and have accepted.
  • The nominee must submit a presentation of themselves and how they want to work in the role of dean. The presentation should be sent to valet@bth.se.
  • In the event of competing proposals, an electronic election will be held.
  • The Vice-Chancellor decides on the appointment of the Dean. Before the decision is made, the Vice-Chancellor interviews the candidate(s).

Term of office

Deans are appointed by the Vice-Chancellor for a period of 4 years after nomination by the teachers.

Decision-making procedures

The deans decide either individually on matters concerning their own faculty, jointly on faculty-wide issues and together with the vice-rector on overall issues concerning undergraduate education.

Pro-deans

The Pro-Dean acts in place of the Dean and otherwise replaces the Dean to the extent determined by the Dean.

The current Pro-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, during his/her term of office, holds a special position as Chair of the Education Council.

The current Pro-Dean of the Faculty of Computer Sciences, during his term of office, holds the assignment of strengthening the quality work in doctoral education at the university.

A description of the assignments is given in separate assignment descriptions.

The election of Pro-Deans follows the same process as for the election of deans.
