Roman-Valentyn Tkachuk (Associate Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science)

Can you tell us about your role at BTH and your main academic focus?

I am an Associate Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, with a primary focus on platform security, cloud-native security, and secure distributed systems. My work spans both research and teaching. On the research side, I investigate secure architectures for cloud platforms, containerized environments, and critical digital infrastructures. In teaching, I contribute to courses in cloud computing, malware analysis, and software and system security.

My ambition is to bridge academic rigor with real-world security challenges, ensuring that our students gain both theoretical depth and practical competence.

What does a typical working day look like for you as an Associate Senior Lecturer?

A typical day is divided between research, supervision, teaching preparation, and collaboration with colleagues or industry partners.

Research activities may involve designing experimental setups, writing scientific papers, reviewing literature, or developing secure architectural models. Teaching activities include preparing lectures, supervising student projects, and evaluating assignments.

An important part of the role is also mentoring students and junior researchers, helping them develop analytical and critical thinking skills within cybersecurity and distributed systems.

What does your team look like, and how do you collaborate in your everyday work?

I work within a multidisciplinary computer science environment that includes researchers and lecturers in cybersecurity, distributed systems, software engineering, and AI.

Collaboration happens through joint research proposals, co-authored publications, course coordination, and supervision of student projects. We regularly exchange feedback on research ideas and teaching materials, thereby strengthening the quality and coherence across our programs.

How does teamwork contribute to the quality of your research and teaching?

Cybersecurity and distributed systems are inherently interdisciplinary. Effective teamwork allows us to combine expertise in architecture, cryptography, AI, systems engineering, and regulatory frameworks.

In research, this leads to more robust models and stronger publications. In teaching, it ensures that students are exposed to complementary perspectives and up-to-date industry practices. Collegial dialogue is essential for maintaining academic excellence and relevance.

What attracted you to BTH as an employer, and what made you choose to work here?

BTH has a strong profile in applied IT and engineering, particularly in software engineering and distributed systems. I was attracted by the combination of academic freedom, close collaboration with industry, and the opportunity to build long-term research directions in platform security.

The relatively compact and focused academic environment also enables meaningful collaboration across disciplines without excessive bureaucracy.

What do you enjoy most about working at BTH?

I value the balance between research independence and collegial support. The environment encourages initiative, innovation, and cross-disciplinary dialogue.

I also appreciate the strong connection between research and education. Seeing students develop from foundational understanding to advanced analytical capability in cybersecurity is particularly rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone considering an academic career at BTH?

Be curious, structured, and resilient. Academia requires long-term thinking, intellectual discipline, and the ability to collaborate across domains.

At BTH, opportunities exist for those who are willing to take initiative, build research networks, and actively contribute to both teaching and research development. If you are motivated by impact — both scientific and societal — this is a strong environment to grow in.

Carolina Bergeling (Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences)

“Why did you choose BTH and Karlskrona?”
"When I first saw the job advertisement, I was genuinely happy finally, a position that values both research and teaching! For me, it was about finding the opportunity to combine an academic career with a fulfilling family life in a realistic way. I really appreciate the balance between responsibility, independence, and support, and the freedom to shape my teaching and work based on my own ideas.

My first months at BTH and in Karlskrona were both welcoming and exciting. I quickly felt part of the community and that I could contribute from the very start. The collaboration with local industry has also opened up new and inspiring opportunities. As a parent of young children, life has become much easier shorter commuting times and the proximity to nature and the archipelago make everyday life so much richer.

Karlskrona is absolutely wonderful peaceful, family-friendly, and surrounded by stunning nature just around the corner. The city has everything you could wish for, and I already feel like a true Karlskronit!".

Marco Bertoni (Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering)

“Why did you choose BTH, why Karlskrona?”

"It is hard to explain sometimes. You know the feeling when things just feel ‘right’, and all pieces just fall into the right place? At work, I enjoy the right balance of responsibility, autonomy, support and own time, which is important. Also, I feel free to take my own decisions and to follow my ideas and thoughts.

But not only that. Karlskrona is a very nice place to live. It is a fast-growing city and one has the feeling that things happen all the time. There is something for all tastes: tech, culture (the city is one of the few UNESCO sites in Sweden), nature, sport. I personally love taking my bike and explore the Blekinge region, this is really cycling paradise to me. Well, nowadays Karlskrona is the other place I call home.”

Ljubica Atanasova Stojanovski (Department Coordinator at the Department of Computer Science)

“Why did you choose BTH, why Karlskrona?”

"BTH is an organisation were everyone’s opinion matters. We all bring different perception and experiences from all over the world. In my position at BTH I have the freedom to try new things, to implement new ideas, make improvements and openly ask when I do need help, which also means learning by doing.

Karlskrona is an archipelago paradise with so many islands and beautiful nature that offers you a great potential for many outdoor activities and work-life balance. Moving to Karlskrona as a student or an employee gives you an opportunity to be part of both, an international, but also a very local community.”

Shafiqul Islam (Senior Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering)

“Why did you choose BTH, why Karlskrona?”

"As a relatively new and small-sized institute, BTH creates opportunities to take lead in cutting edge research projects and arranges supports to its employees. The industry cooperation and external research funding is high in comparison to its size.

BTH through its policy and its great employees has always ensured a true international environment for me. An agile, short, and fast decision-making process at BTH allows me and other to gather necessary resources and quickly utilizing in already established lab facilities and other resources. For the same reasons, BTH has attracted research leaders to join our teams over the years.”

Deepika Badampudi (Senior Lecturer at the Department of Software Engineering)

“Why did you choose BTH, why Karlskrona?”

"I joined BTH as part of the European Commission-sponsored master’s program. During my master’s education, I developed a genuine interest in software engineering research. Soon after my master’s education, I had a great opportunity to join as a Ph.D. student at BTH, one of the world’s most active research institutes in software engineering.

Ample opportunities to apply for external funding and close collaboration with the surrounding ICT companies make BTH an excellent work environment for young researchers to accelerate their academic careers.

The highlight of working at BTH is that I get to work with colleagues and students from different nationalities. Another great advantage of working at BTH is its great location. Located by the Baltic Sea, my office at BTH is just a stone’s throw away from the sea, which I much appreciate!”

Bruna Palm (Senior Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences)

“My first contact with BTH was in 2018 when I spent one year as a guest Ph.D. student at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. During that time, I had a great work environment that provided me with all the necessary structure to carry out quality research in the radar image modeling field.

Additionally, at BTH I had the opportunity to work with an exceptional multicultural team, the cultural diversity that BTH has is wonderful! That time had significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth.

I like to say that my time in Sweden was a life-changing experience, and I am more than happy to join the BTH team again as an associate senior lecturer. Karlskrona is a very charming and cozy city, with really beautiful nature. Without fear, I can say that Karlskrona is where I feel at home!”
