Application to bachelor's studies
Not sure if you're eligible to apply? This page will help you understand the entry requirements for bachelor's programmes, the documents you need to submit and how your qualifications are assessed.
Check your eligibility before you apply
If you are planning to apply for a bachelor's programme at BTH, start by checking that you meet the general, programme-specific and English language requirements. You also need to make sure that you have the required documents before submitting your application.
General entry requirements for Bachelor’s level studies
To meet the general entry requirements for Bachelor’s level studies all students must:
- have successfully completed their upper secondary education (post-16) that gives access to universities in the student’s home country. Note that for students who received their final school grades after 31 December 2009, there is an additional entry requirement for mathematics.
- be able to demonstrate the required proficiency in English (generally English 6/English level 2) by means of an internationally recognised test, e.g. TOEFL, IELTS or the equivalent
- meet any additional country-specific requirements
Visit the links below to find more information about this specific requirement at the University Admissions website.
Am I eligible?
To be admitted to a bachelor's programme, you must meet all of the following requirements:
General entry requirements
You must have completed an upper secondary qualification that gives you access to higher education in your home country, or an equivalent qualification to meet the general entry requirements. The exact requirements depend on the country where you completed your education.
Programme-specific entry requirements
Each programme has its own specific entry requirements. These usually include particular upper secondary subjects, such as a certain level of Mathematics.
English language requirements
You may be able to meet the requirement through previous upper secondary school studies or an approved English language test. The accepted qualifications and test scores are listed on University Admissions.
All applicants must show that they have an English proficiency equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6/English Level 2.
You can meet the requirement with an English test, for example an IELTS total score of 6.5 with no section below 5.5, a TOEFL total score of 90 with score of 20 (scale 0-30) in the writing section (test results 20 January 2026 and earlier) or TOEFL total score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) with no section less than 4 (test results 21 January 2026 and later).
Depending on your country of previous studies you may also meet the requirement through completed upper secondary education or university studies. Visit University Admissions to see all accepted English tests and application documents for your country of previous studies.
How can I check if I am eligible?
- Check the entry requirements on the programme page.
- Compare them with your upper secondary qualification and the subjects you have studied.
- Check that you meet the English language requirement.
Your qualifications will be formally assessed after you have submitted a complete application.
BTH cannot provide a final assessment of your eligibility before you apply.
What documents do I need?
Find out which documents you need to submit and whether they need to be translated or certified at Universityadmissions.
The required documents depend on the country where you completed your education.
You will need:
- your upper secondary diploma or certificate
- transcripts showing the subjects you studied and the grades you received
- proof that you meet the English language requirement,
- any additional documents requested by University Admissions
You must follow the document instructions for the country where you completed your education.
Some documents may need to be:
- submitted in the original language
- officially translated into English or Swedish
- submitted in a particular way
Upload all required documents to your account at Universitya Amissions (or send by post if requested) as soon as possible or by the document deadline at the latest. This ensures that you have enough time to submit any additional documents that may be requested.
If your application is incomplete, your eligibility may not be assessed.
Can I apply if I am in my final year of upper secondary education?
If you are in your final year of your upper secondary education and will receive your final diploma and grades in June
If you have not received your final qualifications before the application deadline, you cannot apply in the regular admission round.
Instead, you may be able to submit a late application after the regular selection results have been published (normally at the end of March).
If you also need a residence permit
If you are in your final year and need a residence permit to study in Sweden, we recommend applying the following year.
A late application usually does not allow enough time to obtain a residence permit before the programme starts.
Example: If you are in your last year and you will get your official upper secondary school degree/certificates later than May 2027 you will not be able to study a programme that starts in autumn 2027 and we advise you to apply for the autumn 2028 when the application opens in October 2027.
Can I apply late?
Sometimes a programme or course is open for late applications after the deadline.
If late applications are accepted, you will see the message "Open for late application" on the programme or course page at University Admissions. You apply in the same way as during the regular application period. Follow the steps on Applying to BTH.
Late applications are processed in the order they are received, so we recommend that you apply and submit necessary documents as soon as possible.
If a programme or course is not open for late applications, you cannot submit a late application or upload documents after the application deadline.
If you need a residence permit
If need a residence permit to study in Sweden, we recommend applying the following year.
A late application usually does not allow enough time to obtain a residence permit before the programme starts.
Can I submit documents after deadline?
Documents submitted after the deadline will make your application late, and the application will be considered as being done from the date they are submitted.
If the programme or course is closed for applications on that date, your application will not be considered.
How do I know if my documents have been received?
Log in to your account at University Admissions and check your application status. If your documents are listed there, they have been received by University Admissions and are available for us to assess.
What does "Conditionally admitted" mean?
If you have applied to a programme/course on bachelors level you will be conditionally admitted if you:
- are required to pay tuition fee.
If you are required to pay tuition fees, your Admission Notice/Notification of Selection Results will show your status as conditionally admitted.
Your status will remain conditionally admitted even after you have paid the first tuition fee instalment. This is because the University Admissions system does not register tuition fee payments made to the university.
The Swedish Migration Agency accepts the Admission Notice/Notification of Selection Results as proof of admission, even if your status is conditionally admitted.
Read more about who is required to pay tuition fee on the UniversityAdmissions website.
How are my qualifications assessed?
University Admissions:
- checks your documents
- assesses whether you meet the general entry requirements
- assesses whether you meet the English language requirement
BTH:
- assesses whether you meet the programme-specific entry requirements
Your application must be complete for your qualifications to be assessed.
