Application to master's studies
This page will help you understand the entry requirements for master's programmes, the documents you need to submit and how your qualifications are assessed.
Check your eligibility before you apply
If you are planning to apply for a master's programme at BTH, start by checking that you meet the general, programme-specific and English language requirements. You also need to make sure that you have the required documents before submitting your application.
When you submit your application
Make sure that you:
Am I eligible?
To be admitted to a master's programme, you must meet all of the following requirements:
General entry requirements
The general entry requirements determine whether you have the academic level required for master's studies.
You must have a bachelor's degree, or an equivalent qualification, from an internationally recognised university.
In some cases, students in the final year of a bachelor's programme may also apply.
Programme-specific entry requirements
Programme-specific entry requirements determine whether your previous studies provide the academic background required for the programme you want to apply for.
You will need a Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent to most Master programmes at BTH.
Always check the programme page for the exact requirements as each master's programme has its own specific entry requirements. These may include:
- a bachelor's degree in a particular subject area
- previous studies in specified subjects
- professional qualifications
Also check specific documents required by BTH
English language requirements
You may be able to meet the requirement through previous upper secondary school studies or an approved English language test. The accepted qualifications and test scores are listed on University Admissions.
All applicants must show that they have an English proficiency equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6/English Level 2.
You can meet the requirement with an English test, for example an IELTS total score of 6.5 with no section below 5.5, a TOEFL total score of 90 with score of 20 (scale 0-30) in the writing section (test results 20 January 2026 and earlier) or TOEFL total score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) with no section less than 4 (test results 21 January 2026 and later).
Depending on your country of previous studies you may also meet the requirement through completed upper secondary education or university studies. Visit University Admissions to see all accepted English tests and application documents for your country of previous studies.
How can I check if I am eligible?
- Check the entry requirements on the programme page.
- Compare them with your bachelor's degree and previous university studies.
- Check that you meet the English language requirement.
- Check whether the programme requires any additional documents.
Your qualifications will be formally assessed after you have submitted a complete application.
BTH cannot provide a final assessment of your eligibility before you apply.
What documents do I need?
Find out which documents you need to submit and whether they need to be translated or certified at University Admissions.
The required documents depend on the country where you completed your university education.
You will need:
- your bachelor's degree certificate
- transcripts showing the courses you completed, the credits awarded and the grades you received (in original language and an official translation see Universityadmissions for information)
- proof that you meet the English language requirement
- specific documents required by BTH
- any additional documents requested by University Admissions
You must follow the document instructions for the country where you completed your education.
Some documents needs to be:
- submitted in the original language
- officially translated into English or Swedish, for example course information forms and work certificates (if required)
- submitted in a particular way, for example academic records that needs to be sent directly from your university (see University Admissions)
Documents you do not need:
- You do not need to submit a CV and/or letter of intent.
Upload all required documents to your account at University Admissions (or send by post if requested by University Admissions) by the document deadline. If your application is incomplete, your eligibility may not be assessed.
How do I know if my documents have been received?
Log in to your account at University Admissions and check your application status. If your documents are listed there, they have been received by University Admissions and are available for us to assess.
Can I submit documents after deadline?
Documents submitted after the deadline will make your application late, and the application will be considered as being done from the date they are submitted.
If the programme or course is closed for applications on that date, your application will not be considered.
Can I apply before I graduate?
If your degree is not finished and you are in your final year of your bachelor studies, you can still apply for most of our Master’s programmes and be conditionally admitted.
Documents you must include with your application:
- an official document stating that you are registered for the last semester of your undergraduate programme
- an official transcript of records of completed courses
- the courses you are expected to complete
University Admissions in Sweden has created a template for students to give to their university to complete and confirm their final-year Bachelor's degree status that you may use. You find the template on University Admissions. External link, opens in new window. You can also use a written certificate from your university.
Remember to follow any country-specific instructions when submitting your documents.
You must be awarded your bachelor’s degree before you start your master programme.
Submit your finished degree, ie. your diploma/degree certificate and final transcript, to your account at University Admissions as soon as you receive it from your university. Should you not be able to submit your diploma and transcript to your account you need to bring your original documents to BTH.
If you are a final-year undergraduate student enrolled in a Bachelor's program in Sweden, and your academic records are registered in Ladok, there is no need to provide a certificate or proof of current enrollment regarding your ongoing studies.
Programme that requires a finished degree
Please note that the following programme requires a finished degree for admission:
- MBA Programme
Can I apply late?
Sometimes a programme or course is open for late applications after the deadline.
If late applications are accepted, you will see the message "Open for late application" on the programme or course page at University Admissions. You apply in the same way as during the regular application period. Follow the steps on Applying to BTH.
Late applications are processed in the order they are received, so we recommend that you apply and submit necessary documents as soon as possible.
If a programme or course is not open for late applications, you cannot submit a late application or upload documents after the application deadline.
What does "Conditionally admitted" mean?
You may be conditionally admitted if you:
- are in the final year of your bachelor's programme and have applied for a master's programme, or
- are required to pay tuition fees.
If you are in the final year of your bachelor's programme
Your status at University Admissions may remain conditionally admitted even after you have submitted your final documents.
For more information, see Can I apply before i graduate?
Please note: You must be awarded your bachelor’s degree before you start your master programme.
If you are required to pay tuition fee
If you are required to pay tuition fee, your Admission Notice/Notification of Selection Results will show your status as conditionally admitted.
Your status will remain conditionally admitted even after you have paid the first tuition fee instalment. This is because the University Admissions system does not register tuition fee payments made to the university.
The Swedish Migration Agency accepts the Admission Notice/Notification of Selection Results as proof of admission, even if your status is conditionally admitted.
How are my qualifications assessed?
University Admissions:
- checks your documents
- assesses whether you meet the general entry requirements
- assesses whether you meet the English language requirement
BTH:
- assesses whether you meet the programme-specific entry requirements
- reviews any programme-specific documents
Your application must be complete for your qualifications to be assessed.
