Do you want to work with advanced engineering development at the forefront of technology? The Master’s Programme in Mechanical Engineering – Digital Product Development is designed for those who aspire to shape the next generation of industrial products and systems through simulation, digital twins, and AI based methods.based methods.
If you have a solid technical background in mechanical engineering or a related field and want to work with complex, data driven, and simulation intensive development tasks, this programme is ideally suited to you.driven, and simulationintensive development tasks, this programme is ideally suited to you.
What will you study?
You will deepen your knowledge of technical product development with a strong focus on digitalisation and sustainability. A central aspect of the programme is digital twins – integrating simulation, sensor data, physical systems, and AI based models into closed feedback loops to support and automate decision making throughout the product life cycle.based models into closed feedback loops to support and automate decisionmaking throughout the product life cycle.
Key areas of study include:
- Model based product development – using digital models to support smarter decisionsbased product development – using digital models to support smarter decisions
- Simulation driven design – advanced computational methods for optimisation and innovationdriven design – advanced computational methods for optimisation and innovation
- Digital twins – connecting physical products with their digital counterparts
- Innovation engineering and value driven development – creating solutions that are sustainable and profitabledriven development – creating solutions that are sustainable and profitable
- Applied machine learning – exploring how AI enhances product development
The programme is closely linked to cutting-edge research and advanced laboratories in simulation, experimental mechanics and digital product development. After graduation – what are your career opportunities?
After completing the programme, you will be equipped for highly qualified roles in product development and engineering, often in an international context. Potential career paths include:
- Simulation Engineer / CAE Specialist
- Digital Twin Engineer
- Systems Engineer
- R\&D Engineer in advanced product development
Your expertise will be in demand within manufacturing industries, engineering consultancy companies, and research environments. Digitalisation and sustainable product development are central to the future of industry – making you competitive on the global job market.
The programme runs for two years and is taught entirely in English. It combines advanced theoretical courses with project-based learning and practical elements in laboratory environments. You will work on real industrial challenges and develop both technical and soft skills – such as project management and communication.
Year 1 – Foundations and application
The first year builds your competence in innovation, modelling, and sustainability-driven design. Courses include:
- Innovation Engineering
- Model based Product Developmentbased Product Development
- Value driven Design for Circularitydriven Design for Circularity
- Computational Methods in Mechanics
- Applied Machine Learning
In parallel, you will take part in product development projects where theoretical knowledge is put into practice.
Year 2 – Specialisation and digital twins
The second year focuses on advanced methods and digitalisation. You will specialise in:
- Systems Engineering and Knowledge based EngineeringBased Engineering
- Simulation driven Product Developmentdriven Product Development
- Digital Twin
- Experimental Mechanics
The year, and programme, concludes with a comprehensive Master’s thesis carried out in collaboration with either research groups or industry partners.
Projects and industry collaboration
The programme has strong ties to industry. You will work on real cases from companies and gain experience in solving complex problems within cross-functional teams. Examples include projects in digital twins and simulation-based optimisation in collaboration with leading industrial partners.
Note! The course list is tentative. See the programme syllabus for an established course list.
* Elective course
Students who apply for a course or programme, and meet the general and specific entry requirements, compete with one another for available places. When there are more qualified applicants than there are places for an education, the places are distributed through a selection. Read about the selection methods and procedure here.
Evaluations and advisory board
The study programmes at BTH are continuously monitored and developed through yearly follow-up dialogues, course evaluations after each completed course, and programme evaluations. Results from follow-ups and evaluations can lead to changes in the programmes. These changes are always communicated to the students.
Each educational programme is tied to an advisory board that discusses issues such as the quality of the programme, its development, and relevance for the labour market. In the advisory board, or a committee to the advisory board, teachers, external members, students and alumni are represented.
Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Bachelor of Science in a technical field. At least 30 credits in Mechanical Engineering. At least 20 credits in Mathematics, covering courses in linear algebra and statistics. At least 5 credits in programming. English 6 or English level 2.
