Would you like to combine technology with business development and leadership? Our Master’s Programme in Industrial Engineering and Software provides you with the knowledge needed to lead digital transformation and create value in organisations where software is at the core.

What will you study?

You will gain insight into how digitalisation is transforming business models, organisations, and society. You will learn to analyse and develop strategies for softwarebased products and services, while deepening your understanding of technical areas such as software architecture, requirements engineering, and testing.
The programme combines theory with practical projects in close collaboration with industry – giving you experience in solving realworld challenges.

You will choose a study track based on your background – technical or businessoriented – and you may specialise in entrepreneurship, business models, and leadership in hightechnology environments.

After graduation – what are your career opportunities?

After completing the programme, you will be wellqualified for roles at the intersection of technology and business development. You may work as a project manager, product owner, business developer, or consultant within softwareintensive industries.

Your expertise will be in demand at companies driving digital transformation, developing software platforms, or offering services based on advanced technology. You will also be able to contribute to strategic work related to innovation and sustainability – both in established companies and startups.

The programme runs for two years and is taught in English. It is designed to provide both technical and businessoriented depth, with the option to choose a study track based on your background. Teaching includes lectures, seminars, and projects conducted in close cooperation with industry partners.

First year – broad knowledge as a foundation

The first year gives you a broad foundation in digital business development and software engineering. Examples of courses:

  • Products and Services in a Digital World – exploring how digitalisation reshapes business logic.
  • Software Architecture and Requirements Engineering – essential technical concepts for software development.
  • Business Models and Business Ecosystems, and Financial Analysis for Strategic DecisionMaking – providing economic and strategic perspectives.

You may also take courses in leadership, entrepreneurship, and market analysis. In addition, you have the option to specialise in areas such as quantum algorithms or advanced data structures.

Second year - deeper knowledge

The second year focuses on application and deeper specialisation. You will:

  • Participate in advanced project courses where you develop complex software systems in teams, in environments resembling real industry settings.
  • Study courses on globalisation, digitalisation, and strategies for internationalisation.
  • Deepen your knowledge in research methodology and valuedriven software development.

Your studies conclude with a master’s thesis in either industrial engineering or software engineering, allowing you to apply your knowledge in a substantial independent project.

Note! The course list is tentative. See the programme syllabus for an established course list.

* Elective course

Students who apply for a course or programme, and meet the general and specific entry requirements, compete with one another for available places. When there are more qualified applicants than there are places for an education, the places are distributed through a selection. Read about the selection methods and procedure here.

The study programmes at BTH are continuously monitored and developed through yearly follow-up dialogues, course evaluations after each completed course, and programme evaluations. Results from follow-ups and evaluations can lead to changes in the programmes. These changes are always communicated to the students.

Each educational programme is tied to an advisory board that discusses issues such as the quality of the programme, its development, and relevance for the labour market. In the advisory board, or a committee to the advisory board, teachers, external members, students and alumni are represented.
