The research focuses on the areas of healthcare and health science. The common thread in the research is applied health technology, i.e. how health is affected by use of new technology and how technical research can contribute to promoting healthy lives.
Research includes both healthy and sick people, as well as individuals with injuries, disabilities and special needs. We study how technology can:
- Support and develop health and social care through innovative solutions.
- Improve diagnosis and treatment to alleviate symptoms.
- Empower, support and compensate people in different health situations and contexts.
A central part of the research is interaction, which includes communication, interaction and learning. This reflects the multidisciplinary approach that characterises the field and enables the development of technologies that meet both medical and social needs.

Unique clinic in health
BTH has a unique research and education clinic that serves as a dynamic meeting place for research, teaching and health technology product development. The clinic stimulates collaboration between academia, industry and private and public health and social care.
The clinic's activities are divided into three parts:
Health Technology Research Lab
A research environment where projects are conducted to create knowledge about the interaction between people, health and technology. The environment is transdisciplinary and includes researchers, PhD students and partners from academia, industry, regions and municipalities. Research projects cover the entire field of using technology to support people of all ages and improve health and quality of life.
Clinical Trials Unit
An arena for national and international clinical research projects, where both short and long-term studies can be conducted in real and virtual environments. The unit is modern and staffed with experienced personnel with solid knowledge of participant recruitment. It offers an attractive environment for clinical studies and test beds in collaboration with academia and industry.
Health Education Lab
An educational clinic where various health examinations are carried out. Students from the nursing programme and second-cycle programmes have the opportunity here, together with teachers and researchers:
- Design, test and simulate working methods for the future of healthcare.
- Get in close contact with research and participate in BTH's research projects in health technology.

Research subjects
Research in health technology at BTH is conducted in several scientific areas, where the goal is to understand, improve and promote health through an interdisciplinary approach.
Nursing
Research in nursing is based on the human need for health, environment, interaction and nursing actions. The aim is to generate knowledge to:
- Support, improve and restore health.
- Prevent, relieve and manage suffering.
- Promote a peaceful and dignified death.
The focus is on the needs of individual patients and their families as well as on care environments and organisational perspectives in nursing.
Public health science
Public health science is a multidisciplinary subject that integrates knowledge from several research fields to understand how lifestyle, environment, social structure and health care systems affect public health. The research aims to:
- Map population health and its determinants.
- Study health promotion and prevention.
Medical science
The study of human beings from a biological perspective with a scientific basis. Research focuses on:
- Identifying causes of diseases.
- Analysing disease progression and symptoms.
- Exploring pathophysiological changes and treatment approaches.
Applied health technology
Applied health technology is an interdisciplinary field of research that focuses on how health is affected by technology, both at the individual and population level. Researchers study:
- Direct and indirect health effects of technology.
- The role of technology in health and social care.
The subject is also a doctoral subject at BTH.
Research in health technology is mainly conducted at the Department of Health.
