Systems Engineering
Research in systems engineering at BTH covers sensors, signals and systems, focusing on areas such as radar, marine technology, computer vision, metrology, remote sensing, medical technology, applied statistics, autonomous systems and electromagnetic modeling.
Systems engineering is about how different system components interact to create a functioning whole. For example, it can be applied to:
- Energy supply systems - how energy is distributed and used efficiently.
- Radar systems - detection and monitoring technologies.
- Transport systems - optimising logistics and mobility.
- Biological processes - analysis and modelling of natural systems.
Because systems engineering is rooted in mathematics and physics, it allows the transfer of ideas and methods between different application areas.

Research with major societal benefits
Systems engineering research plays a key role in addressing both current and future societal and sustainability challenges. It is crucial in areas such as:
- Infrastructure and transport - developing efficient and sustainable systems.
- Health care - medical technologies for improved diagnosis and treatment.
- Industrial development - innovations in production and automation.
It is particularly needed when technical issues become increasingly complex and new theory is required to handle large amounts of information while maintaining precision, flexibility and safety.
Research in systems engineering is mainly conducted at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at BTH.
