e-DENT II

Introduction

More and more people are growing older. As we age, it becomes more common to experience problems with memory and the ability to manage daily life. This is called mild cognitive impairment. Many people with mild cognitive impairment also experience poorer oral health and a lower quality of life. To enable older adults to continue living at home for as long as possible, support and assistance are needed. Technology can be a way to help people with memory problems manage better on their own. A common oral health condition among older adults is tooth loss, which is one of the most common diseases worldwide. Tooth loss can also be linked to other health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and lung diseases.

More research is needed to determine whether new technology can help older adults with memory problems achieve better oral health. New assistive devices are available, but we do not yet know how well they work.

Methodology

This study examines the oral health of older adults with impaired memory. The study will follow and compare three groups through examinations and surveys. As a participant in the study, you will be randomly assigned to a group consisting of:

  • One group will use a regular toothbrush (TePe Select™ Extra Soft).
  • One group will use a smart electric toothbrush (Oral-B iO™ 5s).
  • One group will use a regular toothbrush in combination with an antibacterial light therapy (Lumoral®).

The study examines how different oral hygiene practices affect oral health in older adults with tooth loss and memory problems. Participants are examined three times over a six-month period. At each visit, an oral examination is performed, followed by a questionnaire on oral health and quality of life.

Purpose

The goal of the study is to monitor the oral health of older adults with mild cognitive impairment through clinical examinations and questionnaires. By comparing the effects of antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and a smart electric toothbrush with a control group, the study evaluates the potential to support and improve oral health in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
