NEAR - National e-Infrastructure for Research on Ageing in Sweden
The demographic trend towards an ageing population is a fundamental change that will pose significant challenges to a wide range of societal functions in the 21st century. Ageing also leads to an increase in the number of people with chronic diseases, which in turn increases the need for community and family interventions. This emphasizes the need to identify effective and sustainable strategies to achieve both longer and healthier lives.
Purpose of the project
The aim is to promote and facilitate Swedish research on ageing, to increase the quality and generalizability of research results and to intensify international collaborations.
Objective to integrate several national longitudinal population-based projects on ageing and health.
Implementation
Since the 1970s, Sweden has had a tradition of studying ageing and health using population-based studies, and today Sweden is internationally prominent when it comes to research on dementia diseases, among other things. The current expertise in social gerontology, geriatrics, genetics, epidemiology and public health, together with the availability of population-based studies, creates a high-quality potential for establishing a national infrastructure for innovative research on ageing in Sweden. Through support from VR, we now have the opportunity to build and operate the National E-Infrastructure for Ageing Research - NEAR.
