OSIR – Open Source Inspired Reuse
To realize reuse benefits, companies integrate open source assets and are also interested in reusing internally developed assets. However, reuse is mainly practiced in an ad hoc manner, which means that companies cannot fully exploit reuse benefits.
Aim of the project
The project aims to enable and support companies to exploit their internal reuse potential.
Software companies continuously strive to deliver quality products on time to maintain and improve their market competitiveness. Software reuse is one such practice that has the potential to improve product quality (e.g. by reusing trusted assets) as well as time to market (by reusing rather than reinventing). The overall objective is to support systematic internal reuse of open source and internally developed assets at the organizational level.
Implementation
The OSIR project aims to propose a framework (the OSIR framework) to practice asset reuse. The intention is to optimize the benefits at the organizational level and align it with the CI and CD approaches to further improve the flow. In addition, the project aims to build on the approach of the open source community to facilitate and accelerate the adoption of systematic intra-enterprise reuse. In particular, the project will contribute to new solutions for using "inner source" to support systematic practices of internal reuse at the organizational level. The OSIR framework will also provide support for measuring the value created by applying reuse in a systematic way.
