SESUMOPLIN – Seeds for Sustainable Mobility Planning and Infrastructure
The EU has set an ambitious target to reduce CO2 emissions from road and urban transport by 60% by 2050. Achieving this will require combining spatial planning, urban mobility, 'smart cities' and sustainability strategy, and emerging ICT technologies into a whole - put into practice through pilots. Much has been done on the ground, but an overall strategy and pilots are lacking.
Purpose of the report
The transport sector is responsible for almost 30% of the EU's total CO2 emissions, 72% of which come from road transport. The EU has set an ambitious target to reduce these emissions by 60% by 2050. In addition to road transport, CO2 emissions are concentrated in urban areas where population density is high and the number of vehicles emitting CO2 per km2 is the highest. Several initiatives have been put in place to tackle the problem from different angles and to bring the green transition along: from investing in new technologies (e.g. electric vehicles using only renewable energy sources) to imposing legislative restrictions (banning passenger cars from entering urban areas). Much has been achieved, but more remains to be done.
Implementation
We aim to carry out a pilot study analyzing, assessing and comparing relevant experiences of the partners in the field; identify major bottlenecks and on this basis prepare an application for additional funding from external sources, such as the Interreg programme, Horizon or the Digital Europe programme to overcome them.
