At the third-cycle level, there are two degrees: the licentiate degree, which comprises 120 credits, and the doctoral degree, which comprises 240 credits.
The licentiate degree is preceded by a licentiate seminar, and the doctoral degree by a public defence. In both cases, the research student publicly defends his or her thesis (licentiate or doctoral). A licentiate seminar can conclude the research studies, but can also be a step on the way to a doctoral degree.
PhD defences in particular are subject to extensive regulations both at national level in the Higher Education Ordinance and in local rules and require a long preparation time. Read more in the applicable Rules for third-cycle education at BTH and contact fo.adm@bth.se for guidance in the process.
The library is responsible for the process of publishing a thesis at BTH.
