Gunilla Åkesson Nilsson received her PhD in 2004 in analytical chemistry in the field of environmental analysis with the thesis "Determination of chlorinated fatty acids using SPE, XSD and GC/MS with particular regard to cultured human cells" at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala. In 2008, she obtained a teaching degree in chemistry, environmental science and natural science for upper secondary and primary school in 2008 at Linnaeus University in Växjö. She also completed a trainee program in 2008 as a principal at municipal schools.
Gunilla has worked as a teacher at colleges and universities since 1995 and during these years she has taught future environmental and biomedical scientists, biologists, biomedical analysts, pharmacists, environmental scientists, engineers, future and active teachers in both basic and advanced level in chemistry. She has also taught courses for PhD students in biomedicine and has been both examiner and supervisor for degree projects in a variety of programs, especially in teacher education. Since 2009, Gunilla has been employed as a lecturer in chemistry at the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at BTH. Here she mainly teaches chemistry, thermodynamics and materials science, but also technical communication for engineering students. She has also held continuing education courses in chemistry for active teachers in preschool, primary and secondary school in chemistry. In addition to teaching at colleges and universities, she has taught students at upper secondary school, adult education and at the gardener program. During the period 2012-2015 she was the program manager for the Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management. From 2017 she is one of the coordinators of the SI program at BTH.
