Markus Fiedler

Professor Markus Fiedler (MFI), born in 1967, received his PhD from Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany in 1998 in electrical engineering with focus on information and communication technology (ICT). Since then, he has been employed at BTH. He was appointed lecturer in telecommunications systems in 2000, became associate professor in 2006 and professor in telecommunications systems in 2011. After nine years in media technology, including as head of the main area, he is now active at the Department of Health (TIHA).

Originally from telecommunications-related issues (such as dimensioning of communication links), his research expanded to Quality of Experience (QoE). Since 2005, he has had a major influence on the design of the QoE area by organizing four Dagstuhl Seminars and a Dagstuhl Perspectives Workshop, the QoMEX 2024 conference in Karlshamn, and standardization within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Markus has been active in the research profile BigData@BTH, with a specific interest in the application of machine learning in the QoE area, as well as the KKS synergy project ViaTecH with a specific focus on timekeeping in Virtual Reality (VR) systems. He is specifically interested in sustainability issues in connection with ICT and QoE, as well as digitalization and simulation in the health area. In teaching, he is passionate about quality issues and evaluation as a natural part of design processes. He was awarded Researcher of the Year 2010 and Teacher of the Year 2022 at BTH.
