Study Skills

Here are lots of study tips for both new students and those who have been studying for a few semesters and are looking for new strategies. Get started right away with our 10 tips for new students.

10 tips for students starting university

Before and at the start of the semester. Prepare yourself for the first shock.

1. review your maths - it may sound boring, but having fresh knowledge will make the start of your college studies much easier and better.

2. buy books in time - once the semester starts, you don't want to spend time looking for textbooks for your first courses. If you buy early, you can also buy second-hand and get away cheaper.

3. keep track of dates and deadlines - as soon as you have deadlines and important dates - put them in your calendar and create slots for when you will do what you need to do. You will never regret being on time.

4. stock your fridge and freezer - this way you don't have to spend time looking for food (or panic eating expensive food out all the time) when you need to spend time studying.

When it starts. Keep an eye out and stay on track.

5. the most important thing: Don't fall behind! It's easy to get distracted and put things off. Don't do that, it will be hard later if you fall behind from the start. Fix the four points above - and then keep track of the ones below.

6. Get organized. Keep track of what you need to do and when. Get in the habit of planning once a week. At least. Plan for both a month and the next week, so you can get an overview and know what time you have to work with. This will help you to manage your time and avoid feeling overwhelmed, making it easier to stay calm and focused when studying.

7. Find your place. Try different places to study, such as cafés, libraries, a place on campus or at home. See what works best for you. A good study environment makes studying easier and more fun.

8. Find study buddies. When you're learning something new, it's easier if you do it with someone or have someone next to you to ask questions or bounce ideas off of. And here, most things are new, both what you learn and how you do it. It's also more fun if there are more of you.

9. Manage stress. If you fail an exam, remember that it's not the end of the world. Talk to others and take care of your health, letting go while maintaining direction. Stress is a reaction that you need to manage, then it will pass. There is also support and help available. Read more about it via the button "Everything you need to know when you start studying at BTH" further down.

10. Take a break. If you do all of the above, there will be time for coffee, parties and everything else fun that belongs to student life. No one can study all the time, so remember to take breaks - as long as the study gets done too. Find the balance, and your studies will go well.
