Virtual Production Studio Lab
The Virtual Production Studio Lab (VPSL) at BTH is an advanced research and education environment where the film and games industry meets the traditional manufacturing industry. Here, technology and methods for virtual production are developed, and the lab serves as a platform for research, technology development and education in the field.
Technology and infrastructure
The VPSL is equipped with the latest virtual production technology, enabling the development and testing of realistic digital environments. The lab includes, among other things:
- A 25×6 meter LED wall with high definition imaging
- 600 LED panels that can be configured in different formats
- Motion tracking with Qualisys for advanced motion capture
- Camera technology from Blackmagic Design
- Video lighting from Aputure
- Rendering and control system with NVIDIA graphics
The 1,500 m² facility at Blåportsgatan 10 in Karlskrona has a flexible production area and facilities such as a meeting room, lounge and kitchen.
Research and innovation
The VPSL is part of several research projects focusing on digital twins, interactive visualisation and immersive experiences. The lab is used in, among others:
- Product Development Research Lab (Department of Mechanical Engineering) - research on sustainable and digital product service systems
- ViaTech - development of new visual and interactive applications
- HINTS project - studies of human-centered intelligent digital realities
A resource for education
VPSL is used in several educational programs at BTH, especially in areas such as game technology, digital design and engineering. The lab is part of the teaching in programs such as:
- Master of Science programs in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering and Game Engineering
- Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering and Technical Game Graphics
- Product development
Collaborations and future prospects
The VPSL project is led by Professor Tobias Larsson at BTH and will be carried out during the period September 2022 - December 2024. The project is financed with SEK 18.9 million, with Region Blekinge and ERDF contributing SEK 6 million.
The lab is a collaborative project between BTH, Karlskrona municipality, Region Blekinge and industry partners and aims to strengthen Blekinge as a leading player in virtual production.
