Mario Romero from Linköping University is visiting as the opponent at Chaoming Wang's licentiate seminar on Monday 31st August 2026. He will be giving a guest lecture on "Seeing Intelligence: experiencing AI through immersive visualization and conversation".
Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving beyond traditional screen-based interactions and becoming embedded within the environments where people learn, work, and make decisions. This talk explores how AI, immersive visualization, extended reality (XR), digital twins, and conversational interfaces are converging to create new forms of human-centered intelligence that can be seen, experienced, and acted upon. Drawing on recent research in industrial training, predictive maintenance, digital twinning, and interactive learning environments, I present a vision in which AI is no longer waiting behind a prompt but becomes an active collaborator through visual, spatial, and conversational experiences. These systems combine machine learning, computer vision, digital twins, and large language models to transform complex data into actionable insights, adaptive training, and real-time decision support. From AI-guided operators on factory floors to conversational avatars in museums and immersive digital twins for industry and society, the talk highlights how emerging technologies are enabling people to see intelligence, interact with it naturally, and ultimately trust it more effectively. Together, these developments point toward a future where AI moves beyond the screen and into the spaces where human experience and decision-making take place.
Mario Romero is a Senior Associate Professor at Linköping University and National Technical Manager of InfraVis, Sweden’s national research infrastructure for data analysis and visualization. His group's research explores the convergence of AI, immersive visualization, XR, digital twins, and conversational interfaces. Through collaborations with industry and the public sector, they develop human-centered technologies that transform complex data into adaptive understanding and learning experiences.
