Selection Procedure for Master's Programmes

Students who apply for a course or programme – and meet the general and specific entry requirements – compete with one another for available places. When there are more qualified applicants than there are places for an education, the places are distributed through a selection.

For master programmes at BTH the following methods can be used:

  • Selection Method 1
  • Selection Method 2
  • Selection Method 3
  • Selection Method 4

For admission round autumn 2026, the selection method 1 is applied to:

  • Master’s programme in Computer Science, 120 credits,
  • Master’s programme in Software Engineering, 120 credits
  • Master’s programme in AI and Machine Learning, 120 credits
  • Master’s programme in Machine Learning, Sensors and Systems, 120 credits
  • Master's programme in Innovation Management, 150 credits
  • Master's programme in Business Analytics, 120 credits

For admission round autumn 2026, the selection method 2 is applied to:

  • MBA programme, 60 credits


For admission round autumn 2026, the selection method 3 is applied to:

  • Master’s Programme in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability, 60 credits


For admission round autumn 2026, the selection method 4 is applied to:

  • Master's programme in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design, 120 credits

 

It is not possible to appeal the merit rating.

 

Selection Method 1

General method for master's programmes

Selection criteria

Prior education.

Specification of selection criteria

Only the number of earned higher education credits documented by the applicant in conjunction with the application will be considered. Foreign credits will be transferred according to the guidelines established by the Swedish Council for Higher Education.

The merit rating consists of the total number of earned higher education credits and is calculated in the interval 30 – 285 higher education credits.

In cases where applicants have identical merit ratings, a random selection procedure will be applied.

Selection Method 2

Selection criteria

The selection method aims at assessing the applicant’s suitability for studying the programme, based on the applicant’s educational background and working experience.

Applicants who demonstrate relevant work experience (ie. employment in the field of their degree) exceeding the minimum requirement of two years gets a higher merit ranking.

Applicants with a Master of Science in Engineering degree (equivalent to Swedish civilingenjör) or a one- or two-year Master's degree following a Bachelor's degree receives a higher merit rating.

In cases where applicants have identical merit ratings, a random selection procedure will be applied.

Selection Method 3

Selection criteria

Motivation letter and CV (Curriculum Vitae).

Specification of selection criteria

The selection method aims at assessing the applicant’s suitability for studying the programme. The selection process is based on the following criteria

0 points: The motivation letter and CV do not demonstrate an interest in the programme and/or the applicant did not submit application documents on time.

1 point: The motivation letter and CV demonstrate an interest in the programme.

2 points: The motivation letter and CV clearly demonstrates a strong interest in the programme.

Maximum merit rating

The merit ranking is based on an assessment of the applicant’s motivation letter and CV with the purpose of determining whether the applicant has sufficient preconditions to successfully complete the programme. The merit ranking ranges between 0 and 2.

In cases where applicants have identical merit ratings, a random selection procedure will be applied.

The merit rating is based on a comprehensive assessment of the applicant's previous education
