Immerse yourself in the technologies shaping tomorrow’s digital experiences. This programme gives you the skills to design, develop and evaluate advanced XR applications and intelligent interactive systems, combining technical depth with creativity and human-centred innovation.
What will you study?
You will explore how extended reality, artificial intelligence and interactive technologies come together to create new forms of digital experiences. The programme offers a blend of advanced computer science courses and hands-on development in areas such as game engine architecture, 3D programming, XR interaction techniques, AI-driven tools and immersive analytics.
Throughout your studies, you will work with practical projects, research-based methods and industry relevant tools. You will learn how to design meaningful interactive systems, evaluate user experiences and apply cutting-edge technologies to real-world challenges.
After graduation – what career opportunities will you have?
Graduates are prepared for a wide range of roles in the rapidly expanding XR and interactive technology sectors. You can work with XR and game development, immersive applications, intelligent interfaces, digital twins, interactive media or human–machine interaction.
Industries such as entertainment, manufacturing, healthcare, education, mobility, tourism and the public sector increasingly rely on immersive and intelligent systems. With strong technical expertise and practical experience, you will be well equipped for an international career at the forefront of digital innovation.
The programme leads to a master’s degree in computer science with a specialisation in XR and intelligent interactive systems.
The two-year programme combines advanced studies in computer science with practical development of XR systems and intelligent interactive technologies. You will gain both theoretical foundations and applied skills, supported by modern tools, industry collaboration and an active research environment focused on human-centred intelligent realities.
The programme includes courses in XR development, AI-assisted tools, 3D programming, human–computer interaction, immersive analytics and project-based work. Your studies conclude with a substantial master’s thesis.
Year 1 – Building core knowledge and technical foundations
Research methods and human-centred interaction
Your first year introduces scientific methods, critical analysis and user-centred perspectives. You learn how to plan and conduct research-oriented work and how to evaluate interactive systems using both subjective and objective methods. Courses in human factors help you understand how people perceive, interact with and experience digital systems.
Core technical skills: XR, 3D programming and AI-driven tools
You develop strong technical abilities through courses in for example advanced AI systems for video games and interactive application, advanced AI systems for video games and interactive applications, AI prototyping tools and 3D programming. You explore rendering pipelines, graphics techniques, engine architecture and the role of AI in interactive and immersive applications.
Courses in XR applications introduce AR, VR and MR technologies, as well as interaction techniques and emerging application areas such as industry, education, healthcare and cultural heritage.
Year 2 – Specialisation, innovation and advanced project work
Advanced XR and new interaction techniques
During your second year, you deepen your expertise in XR development and explore new forms of human–machine interaction. You work with multimodal interfaces, haptics, eye tracking, gesture-based interaction and other innovative techniques. You also study how intelligent systems can support adaptive and immersive user experiences.
Project based learning and industry collaboration
A major part of the second year is a project course where you design, prototype and evaluate an intelligent interactive system. Working in teams, you apply agile workflows, manage performance challenges and explore solutions relevant to industry or societal needs.
The programme works closely with companies in the XR and game development sector, giving you insight into real production environments and current technological trends.
Immersive analytics and visualisation
You also study how complex data can be visualised and analysed in immersive environments. The course covers visual analytics, interactive visualisation techniques and the design of XR-based analysis tools.
Master’s thesis
Your studies conclude with a 30 credit thesis in computer science. You independently plan and carry out a research-based project within XR, AI, games, interactive systems or a related area. The thesis strengthens your specialisation and provides valuable experience for future professional or academic paths.
Note! The course list is tentative. See the programme syllabus for an established course list.
* Elective course
Students who apply for a course or programme, and meet the general and specific entry requirements, compete with one another for available places. When there are more qualified applicants than there are places for an education, the places are distributed through a selection. Read about the selection methods and procedure here.
Evaluations and advisory board
The study programmes at BTH are continuously monitored and developed through yearly follow-up dialogues, course evaluations after each completed course, and programme evaluations. Results from follow-ups and evaluations can lead to changes in the programmes. These changes are always communicated to the students.
Each educational programme is tied to an advisory board that discusses issues such as the quality of the programme, its development, and relevance for the labour market. In the advisory board, or a committee to the advisory board, teachers, external members, students and alumni are represented.
