Exchange studies
Exchange studies
Each year, Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) welcomes many students from all over the world to Karlskrona. The most common is that our incoming exchange students from partner universities study for one semester or two semesters at BTH, but we also have some agreements that allow exchange students to study at BTH for two years.
If you wish to study at BTH as an exchange student, you must be studying at a department which has a Bilateral Agreement with BTH. If your department does not have an agreement with us you will not be able to apply to BTH as an exchange student.
Nomination
The first step is to contact the International Office of your home university/faculty as your home university formally has to nominate you by sending a nomination email to in.exchange@bth.se. The following information should be included:
- Student’s name
- Date of birth
- Nationality
- Field of study
- Study Level (Bachelor or Master)
- Exchange period requested
- Email address

Application
Once your home university’s nomination has been received by International Office, an online application form must be filled out by the nominated student.
For the online application you have to prepare the following application documents;
- Transcript of Records including all your previous university studies (must be translated to English if not already in English)
- Learning Agreement (signed by the home university and the student)
- Personal letter
- Curriculum Vitae
- Copy of passport
We do not require certification of English language level for the Erasmus students, but we expect all incoming exchange students to have an excellent command of the English language in order to participate in seminars, lectures and group work, write essays, and take exams. Please note that this only applies for Erasmus students. The bilateral students have to follow the agreements we have.
Please note that you do not have to send the original documents. We prefer to receive all documents in the application database.
Fill out the online application form in the application database.
All application documents must be received by International Office at the latest;

Courses for exchange students
BTH offers several courses taught in English for incoming exchange students. When you select courses you have to consider the prerequisites and the timetable. The prerequisites are stated under each course and they should be respected.
The Swedish academic year is divided into two semesters, 20 weeks each. Each semester is divided into two study periods, worth 15 credits each. Not all courses can be studied full-time, and some courses may run for more than one period. Note that for full-time studies you should take 30 credits each semester. Plan your studies so that you take 15 credits each study period. Normally that should be two courses.
Examples of course combinations equal to full-time studies:

There are several factors determining whether you can be accepted or not to the courses;
- The type of agreement between your home institution and BTH (university wide agreement or specific faculty or department level agreement)
- Specific admission requirements of the courses
- The number of available study places on the courses
In general, if you meet the admission requirements and there are places available you will be accepted. Therefore it is very important that your Transcripts of Records are in English, otherwise the Admission Office will not be able to evaluate your application.
Fact Sheet
In BTH Fact Sheet you can find information about the nomination and application process, but also information about the academic calendar, student accommodation etc. The Fact Sheet is useful both for partner institutions and incoming students.
